Magazines:Tatler CSP case study

 Introduction - Tatler Media pack


1) Look at the Tatler Media Pack. Go to page 2: how does the editor introduce the magazine?Tatler is a fabulously targeted sensationally accurate refle shot to the very bichest readers in the country these people live the life reflected on our pages both phyaical and virtual and boy do they love to shop.

2) Now go to page 4 of the Media Pack. Focus on the print magazine (NOT tatler.com - the website). List the key demographic details: age, gender %, ABC1 % (social class), HHI (Household Income), % of those living in London and the South East. What do these demographic details suggest about the average Tatler reader?

3) Look at page 6. What do Tatler readers think about fashion? How much do they spend?Tatler readers agree because some often buy fashion products after seeing things adverised in magazines. Tatler spends £843 million on fashion in the past year.

4) Go to page 10. What are the special editions of Tatler that run throughout the year? What does this suggest about the Tatler audience? What about the pyschographic audience group that 
The first one about travel because maybe some people like travailing the second one shows wedding themes because other people like seeing about weddings,the others are about beauty and jewellery to look beautiful 
the last one is about school fashion how to dress for school .

1) What celebrities, politicians or famous people are mentioned on the cover? Why do you think Tatler put them on the cover?

Its shows you about the higher class people and what they are intersted

3) Looking at the image and cover lines together, what different groups of people are represented on the cover and how are they represented? (E.g. men/women/rich people/race & ethnicity etc.)

4) Are there any stereotypes being reinforced or subverted? How? Why?
TATILER is reinforcing the stereotypes as a very wealthy people .

Social and cultural context

1) Find three other front covers for Tatler from different months. What issues, subjects or people are regularly featured in Tatler? The fist one 
January-is about having fun in the beach or the pool
March-its about weddings and how rich it can be
April-is about beauty and cosmetic surgery. 

2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain? 

3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler April 2017? 
People who cant afforded surgery .
Extension tasks

1) What would be the preferred and oppositional readings to this cover of Tatler?

The preferred reading is that most rich people wear this kind of clothing and read these kind of magazines but the oppositional reading is that unless you read this magazine and wear this kind of clothing you cannot be considered rich even if you are with reasonable wealth.

2) Are there any misrepresentations or under-representations of certain groups? What might this suggest about the target audience?
The majority of the population are not shown due to the fact this magazine has a very limited, specific audience. This suggests that all readers who read Tatler should belong to the specific type of group which is represented on the cover, i.e. wealthy and glamorous.

3) How does the front cover engage audiences with possible narratives? Look for stories, cliffhangers, dramatic cover lines etc.One is about Boris brother and about love drama and see the Queen fashion 

4) Read this Guardian article on the BBC documentary about Tatler called Posh People. What does the article suggest about the people who produce and read Tatler?

The airy office was populated by handsome youngsters, glossy manes framing neat, nicely spoken heads that punctuated editorial meetings with smirking suggestions about “dogs du jour” or “what to wear in the country”. If there was an ugly person in the office, the camera didn’t find them or else editor Kate Reardon had locked them in a cupboard to maintain clean lines.
