Work through the following questions to complete your first Radio case study on the launch of BBC Radio 1:

1) What radio stations were offered by the BBC before 1967?
It was broadcasting education programmes and news 

2) How was BBC radio reorganised in September 1967? What were the new stations that launched?
renamed their radio channels. On 30 September 1967, the Light Programme was split into Radio 1 offering continuous "Popular" music and Radio 2 for more 'Easy Listening'.

3) What was pirate radio and why was it popular?

Because they can put what every and play or say what they want and becoming more popular and attitudes in young people were becoming more relaxed 
 
4) Why did pirate radio stop broadcasting in 1967?
Because in 1967 the Marine Broadcasting Offences Act officially outlawed pirate radio stations.

5) How did the BBC attract young audiences to Radio 1 after pirate radio stations were closed down?
They will put five hours of music every day and young people will have to listened  to it because pirate radio was shut down.
 
6) What was 'needle time' and why was it a problem for BBC Radio?
Needle time is the five hours in a day and the problem was pirate radio didn't have that rule so people would most likely go and listen to pirate radio station 

7) How did BBC Radio 1 offer different content to previous BBC radio stations?
Radio 1 didn't put boring things (education programmes and news.) that young people would not listen to.

8) Who was the first presenter for BBC Radio 1 and why did these new Radio 1 DJs cause upset initially at the traditional BBC?
It was Tony  Blackburn's he use to work that the pirate radio so the BBC will gain more "popular"the the pirate radio 
9) Listen to excerpts from the Tony Blackburn's first 1967 broadcast - how might it have appealed to young listeners?
You can hear the music so that young teens would listen and enjoy the music and also listen  to Tony Blackburn.

10) What conventions did Tony Blackburn's radio show borrow from pirate radio - which made it very different to previous BBC radio content?  they harid  the pirate  dg that gives the same style as the pirate

Audience and industry


1) What was the target audience for BBC Radio 1 in 1967?
The BBC want to get attention  on young teen to listen to their radio.

2) Why did Radio 1 initially struggle to attract young listeners?
It wasn't "cool" for them because the BBC stood for traditional, conservative values.

3) What audience pleasures did Radio 1 offer listeners in 1967? (Use Blumler and Katz Uses and Gratifications theory).
Offers like pirate  radio style by tony blackpurn witch become the most listen to station 
4) How is the BBC funded?
by an annual television licence fee
